One of our PhD students, Alamgir Khan, has published an article in a national Pakistani newspaper, The Daily Times:
Alamgir’s research is with Khawaja Sara and Hijra people. These terms refer to people legally recognised as a third gender category in Pakistan, in the West we may understand Khawaja Sara and Hijra as trans* women, but this term is not really appropriate as the history and culture of the Khawaja Sara and Hijra has a very different trajectory to Western trans* and gender diverse peoples. The article is about the struggles faced by this oppressed minority during the COVID-19 lockdown in Pakistan.
Alamgir is currently in Pakistan in Khyber Pukhtunkhawa waiting for COVID restrictions to ease so that he can carry out data collection in Peshawar city.
His supervisors are Emily Gray, Peter Kelly and Seth Brown and he is part of UNESCO UNEVOC.
