Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds

Last night I attended the launch of a new documentary soon to air on the ABC. If you have an interest in lifelong learning, wellbeing and the power of intergenerational contact I encourage you to keep an eye out for it. It will screen over five weeks from Tuesday, 27 August at 8.30pm on ABC + ABC iview

Responding to evidence that 40% of residents of aged care facilities don’t receive any visitors and concerns about loneliness and depression amongst older Australians, this documentary piloted an intergenerational program bringing pre-schoolers into a retirement home to improve the health and wellbeing of the older people.

Over a period of seven weeks, the ten elderly residents and ten pre-schoolers, engaged in planned activities in a specially designed space built within a care/retirement home. Together they engaged in physical activity, social interaction, learning and happiness.

As you can imagine the outcomes were transformative for both groups and there was hardly a dry eye at the launch! I was impressed by the rich opportunities for further exploration and research.

You can watch the trailer here.

  1. I will be watching this for sure. Northern European counties have been doing with with undergrad students and with great results for all concerned. Important to get back to a society that always more connected and not in a social media sense.
