Higher Education Support Amendment

In June this year Minister Tehan announced new measures as part of the Job-ready Graduates Package to support the reform of Australia’s higher education system. Amongst other the things the proposed changes will alter the Commonwealth and student contributions across programs with a view to “better align Commonwealth funding to emerging labour market priorities” (FAQ Clusters Redesign).

As summarised in the table below Education qualifications are set to cost students 45% less. This will not however, be offset completely by a higher Government contribution. A net loss of $1,000 per student per year is anticipated.

Without the support of the cross-bench, the bill has now been referred to the Education and Employment Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 25 September 2020. Stay tuned…
