Coronavirus update

You will have all received communication from Emma Blee, Director of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, yesterday regarding the coronavirus. As Emma noted, we are continuing to take advice from the relevant authorities, including the Department of HealthDFAT Smart Traveller and the World Health Organisation and we recommend staff and students follow these authoritative sources to remain informed.

As a result of updated advice from their government, the students and staff from Beijing, scheduled to visit us next week, have cancelled their study tour. With our Urban School students due to start next week, we are working to ensure appropriate measures are in place to support the health and safety of all.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has advised Australians not to travel to Wuhan and RMIT has made the decision to defer all staff non-essential travel to China until further notice as a precaution.

If you have recently travelled through Hubei Province (which includes Wuhan City), or been in direct contact with people who have, we ask that you contact HR Assist on 9925 0600 to discuss your personal circumstances. RMIT is in the process of setting up a coronavirus hotline and will provide that information as soon as it is available.

Please rest assured that Emma’s team are monitoring the situation closely, with coordinated preparations and actions in line with the agreed incident management response and will make any necessary decisions and actions based on expert advice. I am receiving regular updates.

The latest information on RMIT’s position and actions underway will continue to be made available on WorkLife and our student website.

Action: If any staff members or students experience symptoms, they should see a medical professional as soon as possible (authorities are recommending they call in advance). The Department of Health and Human Services has now set up a dedicated hotline for those who suspect they may have the novel coronavirus: 1800 675 398.

As always, if you are feeling unwell, please stay home.
